Probiotics via Fermented Foods
A tasty way to add more beneficial microorganisms into your diet is by drinking or eating fermented foods - probiotics via fermented foods. You can buy fermented foods, like yogurt or sauerkraut or you make them yourself! We do buy a lot of things, but I try to make what I can. But, I have 3 kids. And a husband. And a home. And a business. And I don’t have a lot of extra time. So, when I tell you I have found an easy way to make fermented foods, trust me that it really is easy!
Kombucha Recipe
Bring water to a boil. Add in 1.5 cups white sugar and boil for 5 minutes or until the sugar is dissolved. Turn off the heat and add in tea. Let the tea steep in the water for 10 minutes. Remove bags or filter out the loose tea. Pour your tea into your container and let it cool to room temperature (this will take a while) and cover with thin cloth to keep dust, bugs, etc... out. Once your tea has cooled gently pour in your kombucha scoby and tea and stir with a clean, non-metal spoon.
How to grow a kombucha scoby from bottled kombucha
Make tea like in the kombucha recipe. Then pour a bottle of kombucha from the store (buy the bottle with the most floaties, flavored is fine) into the tea and stir with a clean, non metal spoon. Cover your glass container with a clean cloth and secure with a rubber band/tape around the opening to keep out bugs and dirt and such. Leave it on your kitchen counter for 2 – 3 ½ weeks and if the kombucha had enough 'scoby' bacteria/yeasts in it, you will notice a thin SCOBY has formed on the surface of your tea.
Easy Probiotic Sauerkraut Recipe
1. Discard the outer leaves of the cabbage. Then remove 2 leaves and save for later.
2. slice the cabbage into thin shreds.
3. Put the cut cabbage into the jar.
4. Sprinkle with salt
5. Fill jar with boiling water
6. Place a cabbage leaf on top of the cut cabbage. This is to keep the sliced cabbage submerged. You may need to play a heavy object (think clean rock) on top of the whole leaf to keep it weighed down. The cabbage needs to remain under water.
Coconut Oil as a Moisturizer
Here’s how I use it. I keep a small container of it in my bathroom cabinet and after showering I pour a tiny amount into my hands and just rub it onto my face and then into my hands. If my arms or legs are feeling dry (rare in my humid climate) I will apply some to those areas as well. After a few minutes the coconut oil completely absorbs into my skin and the greasy feeling is gone!
