We use health and beauty products every day—to feel clean, confident, and take care of ourselves. But not all products are created equal. Deodorant is one of the most frequently used personal care items, yet many formulas contain chemicals and synthetic ingredients that can be harmful to your health. From hormone disruptors to skin irritants, it’s important to know what’s inside the products you apply so often. Here are some of the most common harmful ingredients in deodorant—and what to use instead.
Triclosan
Triclosan is an antibacterial ingredient found in many cosmetics and personal care products, including deodorant. While it’s added to reduce odor-causing bacteria, research shows it may disrupt hormone levels and interfere with thyroid function. Triclosan is also an environmental toxin—when it washes down the drain, it contributes to water pollution and can harm aquatic life.
Parabens
Parabens are synthetic preservatives used in many deodorants and cosmetics to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria. However, parabens can mimic estrogen in the body and may interfere with hormone balance. Because they’re easily absorbed through the skin—especially near the breast area—some studies have raised concerns about their potential link to breast cancer in both men and women.
Phthalates
Phthalates are chemicals used in personal care products to make formulas more flexible and to help fragrances last longer on the skin. Unfortunately, phthalates have been linked to hormone disruption and reproductive health issues. Studies suggest they may contribute to infertility in men and impair fetal development during pregnancy, making them especially concerning for long-term use.
Aluminum Compounds
Aluminum compounds, such as aluminum chlorohydrate, are used in antiperspirants to block sweat glands and stop perspiration. These ingredients have been found in breast tissue and have raised concerns about possible links to breast cancer and neurological issues like Alzheimer’s disease. While still widely used, many people choose to avoid aluminum—especially when safer, non-toxic alternatives are available.
Synthetic Fragrance
The word “fragrance” on an ingredient list can hide dozens—or even hundreds—of undisclosed chemicals. These synthetic scent blends may include hormone disruptors, allergens, or skin irritants, and companies aren’t required to reveal what’s inside. For those with sensitive skin, chemical sensitivities, or concerns about hormone health, synthetic fragrance is one of the top ingredients to avoid.
With so many questionable ingredients hiding in mainstream deodorants, choosing a clean, natural option just makes sense. You don’t have to settle for synthetic chemicals or potential hormone disruptors—especially when effective, skin-friendly alternatives are easy to find.
At Island Deodorant, we make small-batch organic deodorants that are free from aluminum, parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrance—and they’re available in plastic-free packaging too.
Fragrances in deodorant are also harmful. Learn more about that in our post on Why you should choose unscented organic deodorant.
