How to Grow a Kombucha SCOBY From Bottled Kombucha
This is an easy way to grow your own kombucha SCOBY using store-bought kombucha.
Instructions
Make sweet tea as you normally would for kombucha. Then pour a bottle of kombucha from the store into the tea and stir with a clean, non-metal spoon. (Look for a bottle with the most floaties — flavored kombucha is fine.)
Cover your glass container with a clean cloth and secure it with a rubber band or tape to keep out bugs and debris.
Leave it on your kitchen counter for about 2 to 3½ weeks. If the kombucha contained enough SCOBY bacteria and yeasts, you should notice a thin SCOBY forming on the surface of the tea.
A healthy SCOBY will look creamy tan in color and have relatively few holes. If it looks strong and intact, congratulations — you now have a new “mother” SCOBY to use for future brews!
Once your SCOBY is ready, follow our kombucha recipe to start brewing.
